Geographic Information System Specialist

These positions (2) serve as Geographic Information System (GIS) Specialists servicing the West Desert District. The incumbents will provide support and advice for geospatial technology and perform a wide variety of GIS duties and responsibilities. Major duties include but are not limited to:
Designs, develops, and manages geospatial databases, including conversion of digital data in various formats, and the conversion of thematic source maps from analog to digital form through the use of appropriate hardware and software. Develops and implements quality control and assurance guidelines for geospatial data projects. Conducts research to locate and obtain information from existing databases. Compiles geographic data from a variety of sources. Provides technical user support for all aspects of geospatial data and software. Assists in the development of statewide standards and applications. Works actively to bring consistency, efficiency, and effectiveness to all geospatial data. Physical Demands:
The work is primarily sedentary, requiring long periods of sitting in one position, intense concentration, and working for several hours at a time. Stress may be experienced on a regular basis in attempting to respond to conflicting objectives and in working against tight deadlines with limited resources. Work Environment:
The work is primarily in an office/computer room environment. Occasional fieldwork may be required. Fieldwork is in support of resource mapping projects and involves extended days of travel, sometimes in poor weather conditions. The incumbent must be comfortable with less than ideal conditions in remote settings in the accomplishment of mapping projects. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. In addition to the time-in-grade and basic education requirements, to qualify at the GS-9 level you must meet one of the following:
Specialized
Experience:
Applicants must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 level that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of a Geographic Information System Specialist. Examples of specialized experience include assist in GIS data preparation, entry and analysis; provide cartographic products such as maps, drawings & illustrations using CAD technology & graphics; performs recurring transactions within geospatial databases and systems to integrate data files. OR Education:
To qualify based on education you must have 36 semester hours of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree in a directly related fields of study.OR Combination of Graduate Education and
Experience:
Combinations of successfully completed graduate level education and specialized experience may be used to meet total experience requirements if it has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work. In addition to the time-in-grade requirement, to qualify at the GS-11 level you must meet one of the following:

Applicants must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 level that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of a Geographic Information System Specialist. Examples of specialized experience include providing coordination and technical direction of GIS data preparation, entry and analysis; managing GIS operations project schedules and data entry/digitizing; use GIS hardware and software and provide user support; coordinating and manage system user activities; provide cartographic products such as maps, drawings & illustrations using CAD technology & graphics; performs transactions within geospatial databases and systems to integrate data files. OR Education:
To qualify based on education you must have 54 semester hours of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph. D. or equivalent graduate degree in a directly related fields of study.OR Combination of Graduate Education and
Experience:
Combinations of successfully completed graduate level education and specialized experience may be used to meet total experience requirements if it has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work.

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
